Welcome to the Breathlessness Support Service research

digital, equitable approach to breathlessness support

About the Project

 Adapting Breathlessness Support for Telehealth
This research project explores delivering the Breathlessness Support Service (BSS) through a digital platform to help adults manage chronic breathlessness. It employs evidence mapping, artificial intelligence, and co-design processes to create a safe, accessible, and clinically validated  tool. Our goal is to empower individuals to take control of their health and improve their quality of life.

Get Involved

Help Shape the Breathlessness Support Tool
People with lived experience of breathlessness, caregivers, and clinicians are invited to collaborate with us. We are committed to inclusion, and we particularly welcome involvement from individuals who are often under‑represented in research, including people from minority ethnic communities. All contributors will receive fair reimbursement for their time, in line with NIHR guidance.

Breathlessness Support Service (BSS)

Background

What It is

This is a holistic, evidence‑based intervention designed to help people living with chronic breathlessness improve their confidence, manage symptoms, and enhance quality of life. It brings together physiotherapists, nurses, psychologists, and palliative care specialists to provide personalised, multidisciplinary support.

Why It Matters

Breathlessness affects people with chronic respiratory, cardiac, and advanced disease conditions. It can limit daily activities, reduce independence, and increase distress. The BSS has been shown to improve mastery, reduce symptom burden, and support emotional wellbeing.
